Quickstart
The shortest path from nothing to a routing decision. Everything below is run against the same small configuration, first offline with the CLI, then through each of the two ingress modes.

Container images are published to ghcr.io/vibed-project/routed and
ghcr.io/vibed-project/routed-operator, tagged with the release tag (for
example v0.1.2). The Helm chart is published as an OCI artifact at
oci://ghcr.io/vibed-project/charts/routed.
To build from source instead, the repository ships a pinned toolchain container, so no host Rust toolchain is needed:

make build produces routed, routed-operator and routedctl. The examples
below use routedctl and routed directly; from a source checkout, run them
through the toolchain container:

Step 1: a minimal configuration
routeD is configured with four kinds of resource. One file with two
DataClass objects, three ModelTier objects, one RouterProfile and one
RoutingPolicy is enough to route:

Two things to notice. us-cheap is priced in USD, so the RouterProfile must
carry a conversion rate: a non-EUR tier without one is a compile error. And
only requests asking for the model alias auto are routed; anything else is
passed through untouched.
Check that it compiles before going further. routedctl uses the same compiler
the operator does, so a file that validates here validates in the cluster:

Step 2: explain a decision offline
No cluster, no gateway, no network. routedctl explain runs the real engine
over the real compiler:

The trace is followed by the decision JSON. Add --json to print only the
JSON. This is the same document the router puts on the wire.
Step 3, option A: inline mode
Inline mode puts routeD in front of an OpenAI-compatible gateway. Clients talk to routeD; routeD forwards to exactly one upstream:

The router refuses readiness until it has a snapshot, so check /readyz before

The upstream gateway received the rewritten model field, and never saw the alias:

Now the same request tagged as personal data. The header can only make routing stricter, never looser:

The gateway received "model":"mistral-large-eu". us-cheap was eliminated
because the personal class is not in its allowedDataClasses, and eu-small
because its predicted quality for this task is below the policy quality floor.
X-Routed-Decision carries that reasoning as base64 JSON; decode it to see the
whole candidate set.
Two more outcomes are worth trying against the same setup:

Add -H 'X-Routed-Dry-Run: true' to any request to get the decision back
without rewriting or forwarding anything.
Step 3, option B: ext_proc mode
For Envoy-based gateways, routeD joins the filter chain as an external processor instead of adding a hop. Same binary, same configuration, same decisions:

The gRPC external processor listens on --extproc-addr; the decision,
feedback, health and metrics endpoints stay on --http-addr in both modes.
--upstream is not used here: Envoy routes the request itself.
The Envoy filter must use buffered request bodies, allow mode overrides, and
fail closed. The exact ExternalProcessor and cluster configuration is in the
Envoy AI Gateway guide.
Either way, the decision API is available in both modes for gateways that prefer to call routeD:

Step 4: on Kubernetes
Install the chart, pointing routeD at your gateway and mounting the routing resources as a ConfigMap:

That is the operator-less shape: the router compiles resources.yaml itself
and re-reads it when the ConfigMap changes. To manage routing as real custom
resources instead, enable the operator with --set operator.enabled=true and
apply the same YAML with kubectl. See Operations.
From a source checkout, the repository also ships a kind-based end-to-end
setup. It creates a routed-e2e cluster, builds and loads the images, installs
the chart with example resources, and asserts routing, pass-through, BLOCK,
EU-only selection, dry-run, streaming, the decision API and metrics:

Response headers
Emitted on every decided request in both ingress modes.

Inbound X-Routed-* request headers are parsed as hints and then stripped
before anything is forwarded, so a caller cannot spoof them upstream and cannot
loosen a decision. The request-header semantics are in the
decision API and ADR-0007.
